Nursing and Midwifery Population Data Research Community
Nurses and midwives are key to the delivery of health and social care. Their associated workforces are central to patient care. Research has a key role to ensuring these workforces are sustainable.
Analysis has to date been hindered by a lack of data that goes beyond the professional sphere of the health service. Social dimensions have been absent. This is changing rapidly through innovations in linked administrative data. A key challenge now is to expand capacity to exploit these rapidly expanding resources.
This community offers a platform for existing and prospective researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and voluntary and community sector organisations to learn, collaborate and innovate.
We aim to serve as a vital point of connection, information sharing, and coaching, and provide national strategic leadership for administrative data and research in this field.
We welcome all individuals and organisations with an interest in developing insights into the nursing and midwifery professions to join our diverse and growing community. This includes free access to our online forum, resources, meet-ups and developing repository of information. We aim to use the collective networks and opportunities of the group to drive impact through policy.
Together, we can drive transformative insights using administrative data to the benefit of nurses, midwives and ultimately the wider population.
Meet the team
This community of practice is UK-wide. It is supported by ADR Scotland and liaises with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Members come from a wide range of different academic institutions and organisations. It is led by Edinburgh Napier University:
Professor Iain Atherton (chair)
Iain leads our Health, Mental Health and Social Care research programme. He is Professor of Nursing and Data Science at Edinburgh Napier University with expertise in population health and has previously worked in clinical nursing practice.
Dr Michelle K Jamieson
Michelle is currently a Research Fellow based in the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University and working within ADR Scotland's Health, Mental Health and Social Care research programme with a focus on the nursing workforce.
