Data Insights

Our Data Insights offer bite-sized snapshots of the emerging findings of our research using linked administrative data.

Data Insights allow us to swiftly share emerging findings as they are reported by our researchers. This ensures everyone from government decision makers to members of the public can find out what is identified in our data throughout the research process.

They provide early indications of the evidence held within the dataset and aim to promote further exploration and discussion. Note that Data Insights have not been peer reviewed and are often shared before a linked journal article is published to ensure timeliness.

Data Insight: Analysing a season of death and excess mortality in Scotland’s past

A national system of compulsory registration of births, deaths and marriages was introduced in Scotland in 1855. The records provide a unique source of information about people and their lives, but their handwritten form, which was in place until 1973, has substantially limited research possibilities. All the certificates have been transcribed recently by the Digitising Scotland project and now they are being enhanced and made research‐ready as part of the Scottish Historic Population Platform (SHiPP).

Data Insight: Automatic Coding of Occupations: Methods to create the Scottish Historic Population Database (SHPD)

The Digitising Scotland project digitised 25.8 million Scottish civil registration vital events

records, including digitising birth, marriages and deaths, from when records began in 1855

until 1973 (from 1974 records became digital). To use these pre-digital records effectively for

large-scale full life history research, they must not only be made machine-readable, but also

coded in a suitable research ready format – including the broad classification of some of the

information gathered.

Data Insight: Child Poverty Linked to Early Youth Offending in Scotland

A new study from ADR Scotland reveals that children growing up in poverty are more likely to engage in criminal or anti-social behaviour at an early age. The research, using data from the Growing Up in Scotland study, found that children who offended by age 12, were more likely than other children to live in households experiencing persistent poverty based on relative low income.

Data Insight: Commuting to work by bicycle reduces mental ill-health

It is well known that physical activity has a positive effect on mental health, but there is some debate over whether the domain in which individuals take part in physical activity is important. For example, does engaging in active travel to work have the same benefits as walking or cycling in your leisure time? Research shows that cycling to work, when compared to all other modes of commute, reduces the likelihood of experiencing mental ill-health - specifically anxiety and depression.
