Our research themes

Discover the key areas of focus for ADR Scotland research.

Our Research Leads are based at four leading academic institutions across Scotland, whose academic insights provide a strong foundation for understanding and improving society in Scotland. All our research provides data-driven evidence that can inform policymakers and be of public benefit.

ADR UK have co-developed with researchers and government partners five strategic research themes. These themes align academic expertise with Scottish Government national policy priorities, Areas of Research Interest (ARIs) and analytical programmes, helping to support more equitable and effective public services. By bringing together academic expertise and policy need, they help focus research on Scotland’s most pressing challenges and ensure that insights translate into meaningful impact.  They are underpined by four cross-cutting areas: Prevention, Poverty, Equality and Evaluation.

Our five themes are:

  • Children and Young People
  • Crime and Justice
  • Health, Mental Health and Social Care
  • Housing and Environment
  • Work, Welfare and the Economy

Across each theme, ADR Scotland aims to:

  • Deliver impact for the public, policymakers, data owners and civil society
  • Increase the value and use of existing data
  • Create a transferable body of knowledge and increase the utility of existing data;
  • Support methodological innovation, particularly in data linkage
  • Build research capacity and skills across the community
